Watertown Wednesday: Watertown Boys & Girls Club

Every week we put the spotlight on someone awesome in the Watertown community who is doing amazing things. We love that our community is filled with stars! If you would like to be featured or know someone who should be, please complete this form. Check out this week’s Watertown Wednesday star: the Watertown Boys & Girls Club!

We asked Renee Gaudette, the Executive Director at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club, how the club is pivoting their services to continue providing support to their club members.

While our Club is closed to the public, we are providing immediate and near-term relief efforts with our remaining staff. Our staff is conducting “check in” phone calls each day to our members’ families to find out how we can help them; whether it is how to get a computer so their child can continue their education, how to apply for unemployment benefits or directing them to food distribution centers. Our staff is on standby to help our community with food distribution to those in need.

Perhaps most important, we are providing digital youth development programming for Club members so they remain connected, feel supported, and even learn and build their skills. There are Teen “hangouts” via Zoom, supervised by our Teen Director. The staff is continuing to run activities online every day of the week, including Keystone Club (leadership club), physical activity challenges, Teen Boy Talk and Girl Talk Programs, Yoga Classes, Dance Classes, Fashion Shows, Nature Programs and many more. You can find many of the offerings on our Facebook Page. The staff is also using Tik Tok, and YouTube for their classes.

Currently, we are exploring ways to provide tutoring services to our members, as that is something that has come up on the “check in” calls. We will be looking for volunteers and partners to help us support the academic work of our members, moving forward.

We miss our kids and our Club family. However, we remain positive about the future and intend to not just survive, but thrive in the post-COVID-19 world. Our services will be even more in-demand in the future, and we are working hard now to ensure we can deliver on our mission in the near, and far into, the future.

We love that the Boys & Girls Club is able to continue offer amazing programming for their club members online! Make sure to check out their Facebook Page and YouTube Channel to stay up to date! If you are interested in supporting the Boys & Girls Club, via a donation or in other ways, please reach out to info@watertownbgc.org. As Renee said, it is more important that ever to be able to provide programming for the kids of the Watertown community!
