Competition FAQ

What is Dancesport?

Dancesport refers to competitive ballroom dancing at events that are regulated by dancesport organizations. We call these events competitions, although you do not need to worry about being “good enough” to compete. There are many levels for competition – there is even a newcomer level that allows new dancers to try out competitive events!

Why should I compete?
Competitions are unique experiences that allow you to not only compete with dancers at your own level, but also allow you to watch dancers at more advanced levels compete. Being involved in a competition also serves as a catalyst to your learning process, making you apply the knowledge that you learn with Ballroom in Boston in preparation for competition. Some students find the appeal in the music, costumes, hair, make-up, adrenaline, the trophies, or just the overall spotlight. Whatever the reason, you’re always guaranteed a good time!

How do I register for competition and what are the rates?
Simply ask your instructor, and he or she can tell you about upcoming events, rates, packages and payment plans.

What is pro-am?
Pro-am is a category in dancesport competition where one person in the partnership is the instructor (the pro) and the other person is a student (the amateur). There are many reasons why students choose to compete with their instructors. Lessons are custom tailored to the individual student based on their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and skill level. Competing with a pro allows you to be guided with someone with lots of experience which may help to ease any stress or uneasiness that amateur dancers can experience.

When can I start competing?
It typically takes students a year to be fully prepared to compete. However it also depends on the individual student; some may need more time, some may need less. Please talk to your instructor about your competition goals so that we can tailor your lessonsto your needs.
